Newcastle’s First Five-Star Hotel Signals A New Era For The City

Hotel Gotham has opened inside Newcastle’s former fire and police station on Pilgrim Street, marking a significant shift in the city’s hospitality offering.

The hotel launched in late 2025, becoming the city’s first five-star venue and positioning itself at the heart of Newcastle’s growing reputation for high-end dining and nightlife.

Rooms range from a standard double to the Station Master’s suite, with many suites named after Newcastle legends including Robert Stephenson.

Suites feature products from Argentum designed specifically for the hotel, and guests can enjoy a bathtub positioned within the bedroom itself.

The design draws on the building’s 1920s architectural heritage, combining inky blacks and charcoal greys with what the hotel describes as “fire-engine reds” to create a moodily intimate atmosphere.

The hotel’s Siren restaurant takes its name from both the fire engine reference and Greek mythology, with bespoke wallpaper depicting a sea nymph said to entice sailors with enchanting music.

Standout dishes include a beef sirloin served with all the trimmings, a cauliflower cheese side, and a sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce that the hotel considers well worth the indulgence.

Breakfast options span a continental buffet and table-service dishes ranging from a full English to smoked salmon and avocado burrata.

The hotel’s second venue, Fire, dials up the red tonal palette and repurposes recycled fire hoses as menus, with old equipment transformed into lampshades and ceiling decoration.

The bar opens from 11am until late and offers a cocktail menu divided into three sections: the classics, femme fatales, and the director’s cut.

A particular highlight from the director’s cut is “Sorry Mez Jackson”, which combines cazacabel, mezcal and disaronno with coconut rum and black walnut.

Bar staff are also on hand to bring a martini trolley directly to guest rooms, preparing drinks to taste while sharing the history behind each cocktail.

Beyond the hotel, Newcastle offers a range of distinctive venues, including WC, a candlelit underground wine and cocktail bar housed inside a beautifully restored Grade II-listed former Victorian public toilet.

On the Quayside, Dobson and Parnell operates from a Victorian warehouse and carries a visual style that echoes the 1930s aesthetic of Hotel Gotham itself.

Grainger Market sits in the centre of the city and hosts a thriving street food scene, while Dog and Parrot and superclub Digital in Times Square cater to those seeking late-night entertainment.

A short walk from the hotel, Leazes Park offers a large lake surrounded by weeping willows, with views across to St James’ Park, home to Newcastle United FC.

Nightly rates at Hotel Gotham start from £99, with further information available at hotelgotham.co.UK.
