Sunday’s Class One Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association Trophy Handicap over a mile takes centre stage at Sha Tin’s final meeting of the 2025/26 season.
The race goes to post at 12.35pm and historically, horses in the lower half of the handicap have held a clear advantage over top weights at this track.
That trend looks set to continue, with several well-rated performers positioned near the bottom of the weights for the one-mile contest.
David Eustace’s SILVERY BREEZE has enjoyed a productive debut season in Hong Kong, recording four wins and four placed efforts while continuing to improve with each run.
The gelding produced a career-best performance last month when finishing a close-up fourth to Beauty Joy in the nine-furlong Group Three Premier Plate Handicap, a result that flatters to deceive.
Starting from wide gate 11 on that occasion, Silvery Breeze found his passage blocked when making his move down the home straight and was then short of room in the closing stages.
That form can clearly be upgraded given the circumstances, and the horse presents a strong case to reward connections on Sunday afternoon.
His trainer David Eustace celebrated his birthday in midweek, and Silvery Breeze has the ability to deliver a belated present with a bold showing.
The principal danger comes from the Caspar Fownes-trained SAGACIOUS LIFE, who showed encouraging signs when placed behind Soleil Fighter on his first run for three months at Happy Valley in June.
The former BMW Hong Kong Derby hope endured a difficult period with trainer Pierre Ng before being transferred to the Fownes yard in April, and the stable switch appears to have revived his fortunes.
Having been only “half-cooked” on his reappearance at Happy Valley, Sunday’s contest looks to have been the stable’s primary target for some weeks, and he rates the main rival to Silvery Breeze.
Caspar Fownes is also set to be crowned champion trainer in the title race at Happy Valley next Wednesday, giving the yard plenty of reason to celebrate across both meetings.
Before that coronation, Fownes could sign off at Sha Tin with MONARCH COUNTY, who runs in the seven-furlong All You Wish Handicap at 2.20pm.
Almighty Lightning is expected to go off as a short-priced favourite following an impressive victory over the course and distance last month, but the race is far from straightforward for punters.
Monarch County finished fifth in that contest but encountered significant trouble during the race, and he now lines up eight pounds better off at the weights as a result.
This progressive handicapper still appears to hold an advantage over the assessor and is well capable of causing a surprise at a potentially rewarding price on Sunday.
