Superb Spirit And Tang Heart Head Strong Sha Tin Assault For Title-Chasing Caspar Fownes

Caspar Fownes holds a commanding lead in the Hong Kong trainers’ championship race with five winners clear of Danny Shum heading into the final stretch of the season.

Fownes also holds a six-winner advantage over Mark Newnham, with just four meetings remaining and the title looking increasingly within his grasp.

The trainer sends eight runners to Sha Tin and arrives with a realistic chance of cementing an unassailable lead and claiming a fifth championship trophy before the day is out.

SUPERB SPIRIT is one of the standout fancies on the card, lining up in the six-furlong Philip Chen Trophy at 1.45pm looking to complete an impressive hat-trick.

This son of Zousain has been in brilliant form, winning his last two races with plenty in hand over the same course and distance just last month.

Both victories have come on a soft surface, meaning ground conditions hold no fears, and the gelding still looks fairly treated under his current handicap mark.

His most significant rival could be Solid State, a horse who cost a substantial £900,000 as a yearling in Australia and has been turning heads in trackwork since arriving in Hong Kong.

TANG HEART is another strong contender for the Fownes team, stepping up in trip for the seven-furlong Lee Trophy Handicap at 2.20pm at Sha Tin.

The horse caught the eye in both of his two runs to date in Hong Kong, and the step up to seven furlongs looks set to suit, having already won over the distance back in Australia.

Top-weight Chill Easy presents the biggest danger in that race, having bolted up on his most recent start, though he now carries a hefty 10-pound penalty and has been drawn in barrier 14.

All’s Well and Refusetobeenglish are worth noting as well-handicapped runners on their best form, while Sugar Goodson arrives with an intriguing profile from Gordon Elliott’s stable in Ireland.

Sugar Goodson won his only race over a mile at Navan, beating subsequent Epsom Derby-placed James J Braddock on soft going, and represents a wildcard threat.

Elsewhere on the card, Verbier in the six-furlong Swain Cup Handicap at 9.30am and Pejibaye in the six-furlong Chan Trophy Handicap at 11.40am are both expected to add to the stable’s current tally of 66 winners.

Fownes looks set for a productive afternoon that could effectively seal a historic fifth trainers’ title in Hong Kong racing.
