An automobile assault in central Jerusalem has left five individuals injured, according to Israeli authorities. The incident occurred near the bustling Machane Yehuda market, where a Palestinian driver struck pedestrians with their vehicle.
A civilian at the scene fatally shot the attacker, who was later identified as a 39-year-old man from occupied East Jerusalem.
At a Memorial Day gathering, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the incident as “another attempt to murder Israeli citizens,” vowing that the nation would overcome such acts of terror.
Footage captured shortly after the attack depicted a damaged dark-colored Chevrolet hatchback stopped at a pedestrian crossing, with a motionless man lying on the hood while police and bystanders gathered around.
Israel had heightened security measures in anticipation of Memorial Day, which transitions into Independence Day on Tuesday evening, marking the country’s 75th anniversary. Palestinians, on the other hand, regard Israel’s establishment in 1948 as a catastrophe that resulted in the displacement of up to 750,000 people during the subsequent Arab-Israeli war.
The car-ramming event follows a recent increase in Israeli-Palestinian violence. Early on Monday, a 20-year-old Palestinian was killed during an Israeli army raid in a refugee camp near Jericho in the occupied West Bank. Since the beginning of the year, over 90 Palestinians and 20 individuals of various nationalities have lost their lives in related violence.
