UK markets opened on a mixed note on 24 July 2026, as investors weighed a series of major corporate developments alongside ongoing geopolitical and macroeconomic pressures.

The FTSE 100 slipped marginally by 0.001 per cent to open at 10,638.86, while the Euronext 100 eased 0.03 per cent to 1,910.51 in early trading.

Germany’s DAX bucked the cautious trend, advancing 0.55 per cent to 24,900.03, offering some positive momentum for European markets overall.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Nasdaq closed lower at 25,137.69 and the S&P 500 finished at 7,408.30 as renewed geopolitical tensions and tariff concerns weighed on investor sentiment.

In Europe, investors were balancing stronger UK retail sales data against rising US-Iran tensions, climbing oil prices, and concerns that higher energy costs could complicate the interest rate outlook.

Commodity markets remained focused on supply risks, with Brent crude continuing to strengthen as Red Sea shipping disruptions and Kazakhstan production cuts supported prices higher.

Copper edged higher and natural gas also moved upward, while gold was little changed and Bitcoin rose against sterling during early trading hours.

The pound weakened slightly against the US dollar and Swiss franc but strengthened against the euro, yen, and Australian dollar, with sterling buying $1.3312 against the US dollar.

HSBC (LSE:HSBA) dominated the corporate headlines after agreeing to sell its Singapore insurance business, HSBC Life (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., to Allianz for a consideration of S$2.7 billion, equivalent to US$2.1 billion, with completion expected in the first half of 2027 subject to regulatory approval.

The disposal is expected to generate a pre-tax gain of US$1.8 billion and supports HSBC’s broader strategy of simplifying its operations while focusing capital on core banking businesses, simultaneously strengthening Allianz’s footprint across Asia.

Burford Capital (LSE:BUR) also made headlines after an arbitration tribunal awarded approximately US$600 million in connection with a Cameroon mining dispute, representing a potentially significant financial outcome for the litigation finance group.

Burford noted that enforcement and collection of the award remain ongoing, meaning the full financial benefit is yet to be fully realised by the company.

In currency markets, sterling traded at €1.1701 against the euro, Fr.1.0876 against the Swiss franc, ¥218.104 against the Japanese yen, and $1.9107 against the Australian dollar.

Bitcoin traded at £49,064.15 against sterling, continuing to attract attention as a volatile but closely watched asset class among UK investors.
