Reddit Becomes Central Hub For Women’s Health Conversations, New Report Finds

Reddit has quietly emerged as a leading destination for women seeking candid, anonymous health information, according to a new report from Reddit and Omnicom’s The Weber Shandwick Collective.

The report, titled “The New Health Ecosystem,” is now in its second year of publication and examines how women’s content discovery journeys around health have fundamentally shifted in recent years.

Traditional search engines like Google and platforms such as WebMD are being rapidly displaced by Reddit, social feeds, direct messages, and large language model prompts as starting points for health research.

Women are increasingly turning to anonymous online communities to fill a gap that clinical literature and formal medical resources have historically failed to address for them.

Kathleen Hunter, EVP and global healthcare lead for Weber Shandwick’s Women’s Health Center of Excellence, described the core problem the report seeks to highlight and address.

“We talk a lot in the report about an experiential gap. Clinical literature is often grounded in male-centric studies. Women want to understand the lived experience for their conditions in a language that patients actually use,” Hunter said.

The report found that 81% of women on Reddit now feel more comfortable discussing their bodies on the platform when it comes to sensitive health topics, reflecting a significant cultural shift online.

Research confirmed that 61% of women are actively seeking information about what symptoms will actually feel like, while 55% want to understand what is normal versus what should be considered concerning.

Women who used Reddit for health research were found to be three times more likely to cross-reference that information with a large language model compared to those who did not.

The report also found that Reddit users are more likely to enter healthcare appointments feeling better informed after having researched their symptoms through online communities before seeing a doctor.

Between 2023 and 2024, discussions about women’s health on Reddit increased by 37%, driven largely by symptom uncertainty, medical advice seeking, healthcare navigation guidance, and the desire for peer validation.

Women’s partners are also playing a growing role in this ecosystem, with the survey finding that they are increasingly using these platforms to better understand and support loved ones through their health journeys.

The research reinforces the broader strategic argument that health brands and communicators should meet patients where they are already searching, rather than expecting them to find branded content independently.

The report builds on an ongoing partnership between Weber Shandwick and Reddit, which was established alongside the launch of the Omnicom subsidiary’s dedicated Women’s Health Center of Excellence.
