AstraZeneca (AZN) and CSPC Pharmaceutical Group have signed a joint venture contract to construct a new-generation biologics manufacturing facility in Shijiazhuang, China.
The agreement marks the third strategic deal the two companies have reached in as many years, underscoring a deepening and increasingly productive partnership.
The joint venture will focus on the manufacturing and supply of mutually agreed biologics drug substances intended for global markets, broadening both companies’ international reach.
CSPC will hold a controlling 51 percent equity stake in the venture, with AstraZeneca taking the remaining 49 percent under the terms of the contract.
Beyond holding the majority stake, CSPC will also lead the joint venture’s daily operations and oversee construction management throughout the project.
Both companies will jointly manage construction and day-to-day operations, drawing on their respective areas of expertise and established capabilities.
The operational design of the facility integrates CSPC’s AI-driven GMP platform and manufacturing execution systems with AstraZeneca’s global quality standards and supply chain management.
This combination is designed to ensure the facility produces output that meets internationally recognised compliance standards across key markets.
As the business develops and production capacity scales up, the two companies say they will explore incorporating additional products into the venture’s scope.
CSPC has framed the deal as a strategic shift away from simply exporting products or technology, positioning it instead as an effort to export manufacturing systems and supply capabilities as a differentiated strength.
The company sees this approach as a way to establish a more prominent role in the global innovation value chain, competing on operational excellence rather than product alone.
The new facility builds on two prior agreements between the companies, including a 2025 AI-enabled preclinical oral discovery collaboration that carried $110 million upfront alongside significant milestone payments.
A further partnership signed in 2026 covering obesity and type 2 diabetes spanned eight separate programmes, reflecting the breadth of the two companies’ shared ambitions.
Together, the three deals suggest a structured and expanding relationship between AstraZeneca and CSPC that spans discovery, development, and now large-scale manufacturing for global supply.
