The legal industry is experiencing a standout period of growth, with major law firms posting double-digit revenue increases through the first six months of the year.
New data from Citi’s law firm advisory group shows Biglaw firms collectively recorded 11.7% revenue growth in the first half of 2026, driven by an unusually strong surge in client demand.
The figures represent one of the more impressive performances the legal sector has seen in recent memory, with demand growth far outpacing long-established historical norms for the industry.
Billable hours across the industry grew by 4.2% compared to the same period last year, a level of demand growth that Citi describes as rarely seen within the law firm sector.
To put that figure in context, Citi notes the long-term average for demand growth across law firms sits at between 1.5% and 2%, making the current surge roughly double the typical rate.
Daniel Greenfield, a director in Citi’s law firm advisory group, offered an optimistic outlook on the findings, commenting that the momentum shows little sign of slowing down heading into the second half of the year.
“We anticipate it is going to be a strong year for the industry despite the expense pressures,” Greenfield said in comments given to Bloomberg Law on the latest findings from the Citi Global Wealth at Work Law Firm Group.
“Early indications suggest demand continues to be strong in the third quarter as well,” Greenfield added, signalling that the favourable conditions are extending well beyond the first half.
The reference to expense pressures is notable, as law firms have faced rising operational costs in recent years, including increased associate salaries and investment in technology and infrastructure.
Despite those cost headwinds, the strength of revenue growth suggests firms are managing to protect and grow profitability, a result that will be welcomed across the partnership ranks of major practices.
The data reinforces a broader picture of resilience within the legal services market, where demand from corporate clients across transactions, litigation, and regulatory work has remained consistently elevated throughout 2026.
