Andrew Haden, a longtime federal prosecutor who twice served as acting U.S. attorney, has died at the age of 48 in California.
Haden was discovered dead last week inside a vacant office at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building in downtown San Diego, a significant loss for the federal legal community.
He had reportedly been reported missing earlier that same evening before officers located his body at the building.
The address, 880 Front St. in downtown San Diego, is home to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where Haden spent much of his distinguished legal career.
San Diego Police Department officers responded to the scene and confirmed the discovery of Haden’s body inside the federal building.
Police spokesperson Ashley Nicholes issued a formal statement addressing the circumstances surrounding the death and the department’s response to the situation.
“Out of an abundance of caution, SDPD investigators responded to the scene, and no foul play is suspected,” Nicholes said.
Nicholes added that “the official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner,” meaning a formal ruling has not yet been issued.
Authorities have not released any further details about the specific circumstances that led to Haden being found in a vacant office within the building.
Haden’s death represents a significant loss for the Southern District of California, where he built a career as one of the office’s most senior and respected figures.
His two stints as acting U.S. attorney reflect the level of trust and seniority he commanded within the federal prosecution service over many years.
The Medical Examiner’s findings are expected to provide further clarity on the cause and manner of his death in the coming weeks.
