CMI Media Group (WPP) Launches Specialty Communications Unit To Reshape Medical Affairs Strategy

CMI Media Group, a precision healthcare communications company and subsidiary of WPP (NYSE: WPP), has formally launched a new specialty communications business unit.

The Philadelphia-based organisation has long focused on developing proprietary solutions that help life sciences brands outperform expectations in competitive markets.

The new unit is purpose-built to deliver modern, specialised communication strategies that extend well beyond traditional commercial advertising for biopharma clients.

Central to the launch is the immediate deployment of advanced capabilities for Medical Affairs, which the company describes as biopharma’s essential “Third Pillar” of strategic operations.

As therapeutic education begins earlier in molecule development and treatment paradigms grow more complex, demand for sophisticated scientific communication infrastructure has intensified across the industry.

CMI Media Group says it is already actively collaborating with multiple leading biopharma organisations to transform how scientific exchange is architected, delivered, and measured.

Eugene Lee has been appointed Group President of the new Specialty Communications division, with a mandate to scale high-value solutions for Medical Affairs and ultra-rare disease marketing.

“The landscape demands a level of sophistication, omnichannel continuity, and measurement rigor that legacy models simply were not built to support,” said Lee.

Lee added: “We are actively building and executing the future of scientific communications right now alongside our clients. By adapting modern data, AI, and strategic frameworks specifically to the strict compliance and governance needs of Medical Affairs, we are helping biopharma leaders reshape this pillar into a strategic powerhouse.”

Core capabilities introduced include compliant omnichannel scientific ecosystems that connect Medical Science Liaison engagement, medical congresses, peer-to-peer education, and digital non-personal channels into a unified, insight-driven framework.

The broader expansion also extends the organisation’s existing focus on direct-to-consumer and healthcare professional media to include newly launched medical affairs, consultancy, and data and technology business units.

Paul Kallukaran has been named Chief Data and AI Officer, taking responsibility for data and artificial intelligence strategy across the organisation.

Kallukaran will partner with Chief People and Transformation Officer Julie Missaggia, who will lead human-machine collaboration initiatives as the company integrates AI more deeply into its operations.

Marjolein Bruurs will add operations oversight to her existing remit as Chief Financial and Operations Officer, broadening her leadership responsibilities across the expanded organisation.

Newly elevated Client Presidents Shannon O’Malley and Sandy Weag will partner with agency client leaders to ensure consistent delivery standards across all client engagements and business units.
