Novo Nordisk (NVO) Drops “Nordisk” In Major Brand Overhaul As GLP-1 Competition Intensifies

Novo Nordisk is streamlining its public identity, adopting “Novo” as its everyday brand name while retaining Novo Nordisk A/S as its legal global company name.

The move places the Danish pharmaceutical giant alongside peers such as GSK, formerly GlaxoSmithKline, and Sanofi, which was once known as Sanofi-Aventis, in trimming its brand to something leaner and more recognisable.

“The rebrand is designed to be more memorable and relevant to the way people engage with their health today,” the company said in a statement released Monday morning.

The visual identity is also evolving, with the company’s iconic Apis bull logo now facing right instead of left, a deliberate symbolic gesture toward the future direction of the business.

The new brand platform has been given the tagline “Lasting Health Starts Now,” which the company describes as rooted in the idea that lasting health begins today, not someday, through progress people can see and feel day by day.

Alongside the rebrand, Novo introduced a new cultural framework called “The Novo Way,” built around four core principles: customer obsession, competitiveness, clarity, and care and integrity.

The company says the overhaul will provide a “distinctive, recognisable and consistent way” to connect with industry partners and the public across all its activities.

Rapid growth in obesity treatments has reshaped Novo’s patient base, shifting the market toward a more consumer-oriented model where patients move on and off therapies more frequently than in traditional diabetes care.

People, organisation and corporate affairs executive vice-president Tania Sabroe said: “Our updated culture will enable us to move with focus and speed, and our rebrand ensures we show up with relevance and distinctiveness across medicines, partnerships, marketing and stakeholder engagement.”

CEO Mike Maziar Doustdar added: “We remain true to our purpose of changing people’s lives and are ambitious about our future to help them have lasting health, starting right now.”

The rebrand arrives after a challenging period for the Copenhagen-based drugmaker, which has been working to reclaim ground in the GLP-1 market from fierce American rival Eli Lilly.

Novo Nordisk (NVO) is scheduled to outline its business strategy in greater detail at a Capital Markets Day on September 21, where investors will be watching closely for signs the company can close the competitive gap.

The Novo Nordisk name itself has deep roots in Danish pharmaceutical history, originating from the 1989 merger of two companies, Novo Terapeutisk Laboratorium and Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium.
