Nobel Peace Prize Winner Navi Pillay Jokes About Sharing Honor With Trump As President Lashes Out

Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, the South African jurist and human rights lawyer, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, beating out Donald Trump for the honour the president had long coveted.

Pillay, 85, was announced as the winner on Friday, with the news reaching her while she was attending an international law gathering in Nuremberg, Germany.

Her career spans decades of landmark human rights work, including her defence of Nelson Mandela and her tenure as a judge at the International Criminal Court.

She also led the United Nations commission that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, a finding that drew fierce international controversy and political backlash.

When the audience at the Nuremberg gathering broke into applause following the announcement, Pillay responded with a dry quip directed squarely at the US president.

“If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump,” she told the crowd, demonstrating that a lifetime of human rights advocacy had done nothing to blunt her sense of humour.

Trump, who had publicly positioned himself as a contender for the prize, did not take the news well, responding in a manner that few would describe as sporting or dignified.

According to Forbes, the president reposted a Truth Social message declaring that the Nobel Committee had “shamed itself beyond repair,” targeting Pillay directly in the process.

The message labelled Pillay an “unabashed hater of America and Israel” and attacked the legitimacy of her UN commission’s investigation into the situation in Gaza.

The reposted message also sought to promote Trump’s own diplomatic record, pointing to the Abraham Accords and his stated efforts on the conflicts involving Russia, Ukraine, and Iran as evidence of his worthiness for the prize.

Pillay’s recognition by the Nobel Committee represents an emphatic endorsement of her decades-long commitment to international law and accountability, regardless of political pressure.

The contrast between her measured, witty response to the prize and Trump’s furious reaction online drew immediate attention from commentators and observers around the world.
