Amazon Website Outage Disrupts Shopping For Thousands Of Users, Resolved Within Hours

Amazon later confirmed that the disruption was caused by a technical issue connected to a software deployment affecting its retail platform infrastructure.

Amazon’s online store and mobile shopping application experienced a widespread disruption on Thursday that prevented some users from checking out purchases, accessing account details, or viewing product pricing information.

Reports of the issue began appearing during the afternoon as consumers attempting to complete purchases encountered error messages or were unable to load key pages within the retailer’s website and mobile platform.

According to monitoring service Downdetector, complaints about the outage surged around 2 p.m. Eastern Time before rising to more than 22,000 reported incidents roughly two hours later.

Many customers also indicated that the disruption affected Amazon Fresh, the company’s grocery delivery service, with users reporting difficulties reviewing order history or placing new grocery purchases.

The outage triggered frustration among shoppers who rely on the platform for everyday purchases, particularly during a period when online retail continues to dominate many consumer purchasing habits.

Company Confirms Technical Cause

Amazon later confirmed that the disruption was caused by a technical issue connected to a software deployment affecting its retail platform infrastructure.

A spokesperson for the company said the issue had been identified and resolved later in the evening as engineers rolled back or corrected the problematic code.

“We’re sorry that some customers may have temporarily experienced issues while shopping,” Amazon spokesperson Jennie Bryant said in a statement addressing the temporary service disruption.

“We have resolved the issue, which was related to a software code deployment, and website and app are now running smoothly.”

By approximately 8 p.m. Eastern Time, outage reports had declined significantly, indicating that the platform had largely returned to normal operation for most users.

Background Of Wider Infrastructure Challenges

The brief retail outage occurred during a period in which Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud computing division, has been managing separate infrastructure disruptions in parts of the Middle East.

Those issues followed drone strikes that damaged three data centers operated by the company in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, creating additional pressure on regional cloud infrastructure capacity.

Iranian state media claimed that a data center operated by the company in Bahrain had been targeted by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps because of alleged links to United States military and intelligence operations.

Despite those reports and the broader geopolitical tension surrounding the incidents, Amazon stated that its cloud services remained fully operational and unaffected by the retail website outage.

Reliability Expectations For Global Platforms

The disruption highlights the immense technical complexity involved in maintaining global digital commerce platforms that process millions of transactions every hour across multiple continents.

Even relatively small coding errors during software updates can trigger cascading issues within large distributed systems when they interact with payment infrastructure, product databases, or customer authentication services.

Technology analysts note that companies operating platforms on the scale of Amazon must constantly deploy software updates in order to maintain security, introduce features, and optimise performance across their networks.

While outages remain relatively rare given the size of the system, occasional disruptions continue to illustrate how dependent global retail activity has become on complex digital infrastructure.
