Arsenal F.C. Vs Sunderland A.F.C. Timeline: Brobbey Snatches Stoppage-Time Draw

The breakthrough came for Sunderland in the 36th minute and it was emphatically deserved.

The Arsenal F.C. Vs Sunderland A.F.C. Timeline produced one of the most dramatic finales of the 2025-26 Premier League season, as Brian Brobbey stabbed home a 94th-minute equaliser to deny the league leaders a crucial three points at the Stadium of Light on 8 November 2025.

Arsenal arrived on Wearside as the division’s top side, unbeaten in the league and having kept eight consecutive clean sheets across all competitions.

Sunderland, back in the top flight after years away, showed no sign of stage fright, setting up in a resolute 5-4-1 and making life extremely difficult for Mikel Arteta’s side throughout a scrappy first half.

Arsenal F.C. Vs Sunderland A.F.C. Timeline: First Half

The opening exchanges were stop-start, punctuated by collisions and stoppages.

Declan Rice’s curling free-kick was clawed away by Robin Roefs, and Eberechi Eze spurned a golden chance when he got in behind after Enzo Le Fee’s misplaced pass, only to loft his shot over the crossbar.

The breakthrough came for Sunderland in the 36th minute and it was emphatically deserved.

Nordi Mukiele nodded the ball down in the penalty area, and Danny Ballard burst past Rice before firing a powerful, unstoppable strike past David Raya.

It was a blow for Arsenal, ending their long run without conceding and giving an already buzzing crowd at the Stadium of Light even more to celebrate.

William Saliba came close to equalising in first-half stoppage time but could only blast over the bar from a Saka pass.

The Gunners Hit Back: Second Half Turnaround

Arsenal’s second-half showing was altogether more purposeful, with the visitors dominating possession and testing Roefs repeatedly.

The equaliser arrived in the 54th minute through a moment of slick build-up play.

Le Fee was dispossessed by Rice, who drove into the box before threading a pass to Mikel Merino, and Saka finished neatly past Roefs at his near post.

Arsenal then struck the crossbar through Martin Zubimendi and Roefs was kept busy, but the Gunners’ persistence paid off in the 74th minute when Leandro Trossard produced a stunning strike from the edge of the area, twisting before dispatching it into the roof of the net to give Arsenal the lead for the first time in the match.

Ballard then forced Raya into a pair of excellent saves in the closing stages, and Brobbey was denied by the flag for offside.

However, Brobbey finally found the net in the fourth minute of added time, awkwardly poking home from Ballard’s flick-on header to send the Stadium of Light wild.

Lineups

Sunderland (5-4-1): Roefs; Mandava, Geertruida, Ballard, Mukiele, Hume; Le Fee, Sadiki, Xhaka, Traoré; Isidor.

Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Calafiori, Zinchenko; Rice, Zubimendi; Saka, Merino, Trossard; Eze.

The point maintained Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League table, but the manner of the late concession will have frustrated Arteta, whose side controlled large swathes of the match yet were unable to see out a vital victory against a spirited, well-organised Sunderland side.
