BAE Systems Resumes M777 Howitzer Production for Ukraine with $50 Million U.S. Army Deal

BAE Systems is set to collaborate with its suppliers both in the United Kingdom and the United States to manufacture the vital titanium structures needed for the M777 howitzer.

BAE Systems, the British defense company, has announced its decision to resume production of components for its M777 lightweight howitzer.

This move comes after the company inked an initial agreement with the U.S. Army, valued at up to $50 million, for the provision of these weapons to Ukraine.

BAE Systems is set to collaborate with its suppliers both in the United Kingdom and the United States to manufacture the vital titanium structures needed for the M777 howitzer.

The first deliveries are scheduled for 2025. While the company begins these deliveries, it is also in the process of finalizing the contract terms and its overall worth.

The M777 gun system has garnered increased interest from regions spanning Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Previously, the structures for the M777 were manufactured in Barrow-in-Furness, UK, with assembly and testing occurring in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The new contract is seen as a significant opportunity for the revival of M777 production in the UK, although specific production locations have not been disclosed by the company.

Notably, Australia, Canada, and the United States have contributed these weapons to Ukraine.

John Borton, the Vice President and General Manager of BAE Systems Weapons Systems UK, emphasized the importance of this production restart, especially given the deployment of howitzers in ongoing operations in Ukraine.

He stated, “This restart of production of the major structures for the U.S. Army’s M777s comes at a critical time, with howitzers deployed on operations in Ukraine.”

In addition to resuming production, BAE Systems anticipates that this contract will present a unique opportunity for both new and existing users to participate in the M777 production initiative.

They can benefit from a streamlined production process and the advantages of economies of scale as part of this initiative.

Overall, this announcement signifies a positive step forward for BAE Systems and the continued support for Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
