According to reports, Newcastle United is in the lead in the competition to sign James Ward-Prowse, a midfielder for Southampton and England.
The Saints captain is having a successful season despite his team’s problems at the bottom of the Premier League standings.
After a shock victory over Chelsea thanks to his most recent goal, Ward-Prowse pulled within one goal of the all-time record established by former England captain David Beckham.
His goal came via a trademark free-kick.
The 28-year-old scored his 17th free-kick of his career at Stamford Bridge, beating Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in the process, and is now in position to pass David Beckham as the most skilled free-kick taker in the Premier League era.
The Saints captain told BBC Sport on Saturday night: “It’s an amazing feeling, I’ve scored better goals than that one, but I was pleased to see it go in. It’s good for me to know that with any skill in life, if you work hard for it, you can perfect it.
“When I was a kid doing this in my parents’ garden, this was what I dreamed to do. It is great to do it today.”
With only 15 games left in the season, Southampton is still in serious trouble even though the victory at Chelsea Bridge surely helped them escape the relegation zone.
