Baxter International Inc. has voluntarily recalled a lot of antibiotic intravenous bags after cardboard particles were discovered inside the solution.
The recall targets Lot LD175708, expiring 14-Feb 2027, of Cefazolin in Dextrose Injection, covering one nationwide lot of the product.
The affected product is Cefazolin in Dextrose Injection, USP, 2 grams/100 milliliters, a widely used intravenous antibiotic treatment.
Cefazolin is commonly administered to treat bacterial infections or to help prevent infections from occurring during surgical procedures.
The recalled product was distributed across the United States between March 25 and June 30, 2025, with no other lots believed to be affected.
Baxter’s risk statement warns that use of the defective product carries a reasonable probability of causing pulmonary emboli, described as blockages in the pulmonary blood vessels.
The company also flagged risks of occlusions in other blood vessels, which can lead to tissue death and possible organ damage in affected patients.
Additional risks cited include phlebitis, an inflammation of vein walls that may lead to clotting, as well as systemic immune activation, organ dysfunction, and hemolysis.
Hemolysis refers to the breakdown of blood cells, a serious complication that can result from foreign particles being infused directly into the bloodstream.
Baxter said it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recalled lot as of the time the advisory was issued.
Healthcare facilities are instructed to immediately stop using the affected product and return it in accordance with their own facility procedures.
Baxter is actively contacting customers with detailed instructions on how to identify and return the impacted product from their inventory.
