Chelsea Land Promising Goalkeeper But Gallagher Could Be Off To Spain

Following the takeover of Chelsea by Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Capital group, fans at Stamford Bridge have seen a plethora of big name, and big money, arrivals walk through the doors at the club. Although there have been a number of notable departures, their expenditure has been through the roof and plenty in the wider world of football cannot help but question where they sit when it comes to the Profit and Sustainability Rules, particularly with the Premier League clamping down on breaches more heavily last season.

The six capped, Denmark Under 21 international, is a relative newbie to the professional game and he moved around a fair bit in his youth career before settling at Spanish La Liga side Villarreal. Having been promoted to their B team in 2020, his three year spell with them saw 41 league appearances, but the 2023/24 campaign was his real breakthrough year as he was promoted to the first team and made the position his with 43 starts across the season.

This was enough to tempt Chelsea into paying a reported £20.7 million fee for his services, and he has put pen to paper on a seven year deal. The Swedish born youngster will now challenge Robert Sanchez for the Number One spot at the club for the coming campaign, and he has now jetted out to the United States to join his new team mates and colleagues on their pre season tour.

It looks like Chelsea’s business is not done this window either, but the next move for them could be the rumoured departure of star Conor Gallagher.

The 24 year old is enjoying a late summer holiday after competing at the 2024 European Championships with England out in Germany, but it is now being strongly suggested that the club are in talks with Atletico Madrid over a potential deal. Despite his impressive performances for them last year, it seems that with only 12 months left on his contract, the club are now prepared to cash in on him whilst they can – and effectively use him to help balance the books somewhat.

Talks were held with Gallagher earlier in the summer over the potential for a new deal to be agreed, but they are being described as ‘exploratory talks’ only and at least, as of yet, whatever terms were offered or suggested in those discussions have gone unsigned.

Depending on what reports you read, Chelsea could be asking for in the region of £50 million for the player who came through their Academy having joined them as a six year old, but curiously Premier League interest in him this summer is very quiet indeed. Fans will remember that this time last year both West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur were very heavily linked with having an interest in him, and many would feel that the Premier League remains his top option, and it is unclear if he would even be interested in a move to Spain at this stage of his career.
