Jeremy Doku delivered another match-winning performance to keep Manchester City’s Premier League title ambitions firmly alive, inspiring a 3-0 victory over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Belgian winger has quickly become City’s most decisive attacker at the most critical stage of the season, producing a moment of individual quality that shifted the tone of a tight and at times frustrating contest.
City had struggled for much of the first half, with Brentford offering genuine resistance and creating their own openings. Gianluigi Donnarumma was fortunate to avoid gifting the visitors an early advantage, making a poor attempt to claim a Michael Kayode long throw that was only scrambled clear by his own defenders. Erling Haaland also wasted a gilt-edged chance, heading wide from just six yards from goal after a pinpoint cross from Doku.
The deadlock was broken on the hour mark when Doku ran directly at the Brentford backline and produced a fine curling finish to open the scoring. It was his fifth goal in six Premier League appearances, a remarkable return that has transformed his reputation from an exciting but inconsistent winger into a genuinely decisive big-game player.
Brentford had legitimate penalty appeals dismissed at both ends of the game, and City captain Bernardo Silva was fortunate to escape with only a booking after lashing out at Nathan Collins. Those controversies did little to derail Pep Guardiola’s side, however, as Haaland added the second with a backheeled finish from close range to register his 26th league goal of the campaign.
Omar Marmoush completed the scoring in stoppage time, arriving as a substitute to put the result beyond doubt and secure a three-point swing that now has significant implications at the top of the table. City pulled to within two points of leaders Arsenal, who now face a London derby trip to relegation-threatened West Ham United on Sunday.
Guardiola had admitted after Monday’s damaging 3-3 draw at Everton that his side needed to win every remaining game to retain any hope of overhauling Arsenal. Both teams now have three fixtures left in the season. Arsenal face West Ham, Burnley at home, and Crystal Palace on the final day, while City travel to Chelsea and Bournemouth before hosting Aston Villa.
The significance of Doku’s impact cannot be overstated in the context of City’s season. After struggling through much of the campaign with inconsistent results, City have now gone 13 league games without defeat and the Belgian International appears to have found the consistency to match his undoubted ability at precisely the right moment.
Brentford, who remain in contention for European football, are now winless in four away fixtures and have scored just once in their last three road trips, a run that will need to improve sharply before the season closes.
