England’s heartbreaking World Cup exit attracted a massive television audience, making it the most-watched live TV moment of 2026 so far.
Around 24 million viewers tuned in to watch Argentina’s late 2-1 victory over England in Atlanta, as the nation held its breath together.
The BBC broadcast averaged 22.1 million viewers, while the corporation’s social media platforms accumulated 75 million video views on Wednesday alone.
Despite the record-breaking figures for 2026, the semi-final audience fell short of several landmark moments in British broadcasting history.
The average of 22.1 million viewers sits below the BBC’s coverage of the 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony, the 1970 FA Cup final replay between Chelsea and Leeds, and the 2020 European Championship final between Italy and England.
The 1966 World Cup final against West Germany also remains ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final in historical audience rankings.
BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski praised the audience response, saying: “Last night may not have brought the result England fans were hoping for, but it was another occasion that united millions across the UK in support of the team.”
Kay-Jelski added: “Audiences came together on the BBC to witness a World Cup semi-final that captured the emotion, drama and pride that football can deliver.”
He also highlighted the broader reach of the coverage, stating: “Throughout this tournament, audiences have turned to the BBC not just for the live matches, but to share in the stories, the analysis and the moments that bring the nation together.”
Kay-Jelski concluded: “The extraordinary reach of our coverage across TV, iPlayer, BBC Sounds, the BBC Sport website, app and socials, reflects the enduring power of major sporting events to create shared experiences on a remarkable scale.”
Anthony Gordon gave England hope by putting the side ahead, but two late Argentina goals ended Thomas Tuchel’s team’s dreams of a World Cup final appearance.
Tuchel has reportedly been backed to continue as England manager and lead the team into a home European Championship in 2028.
Both the BBC and ITV will share broadcasting duties for Sunday’s final, which will see Argentina face Spain for the World Cup trophy.
