A deep run by England at the Fifa World Cup could generate an additional £250m in retail and home-viewing expenditure across the country.
Data from Novuna Finance suggests that a knockout run by Thomas Tuchel’s side could produce an initial uplift of between £75m and £150m in consumer spending.
Should England reach the World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey later this month, that figure could climb to £250m, according to the data.
Novuna Finance’s Theresa Lindsay said England’s success on the pitch could translate into a significant commercial uplift elsewhere in the broader economy.
Special legislation was laid last Friday to allow pubs to stay open until 5am on Monday morning after England beat Mexico 3-2 in Mexico City to reach the quarter-finals.
The victory secured England’s place in the last eight for a third consecutive World Cup, marking another milestone tournament run for Tuchel’s squad.
England’s remaining fixtures offer hospitality-friendly scheduling, with their quarter-final against Norway slated for 10pm BST on Saturday, followed by potential semi-final and final appearances at 8pm.
The British Beer and Pub Association told City AM that an extra one million pints could have been sold following pubs being granted extended licences across the tournament.
English fans have spent an additional £20m at the bar on each of the Three Lions’ matchdays so far, which could total £180m in revenue across all fixtures.
That income is particularly significant for pubs and hospitality venues, which have been hounded by recent tax changes made by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in her Budget last year.
The World Cup final is slated for Sunday 19 July, a date that could coincide with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s final day in post following his resignation announcement.
Since his resignation, Starmer has made changes to pub licences during the tournament and used social media throughout to engage voters in World Cup fever.
England face Norway on Saturday night, with the nation’s hopes and considerable consumer spending power riding on the result.
