Gillian Anderson, best known for her roles in Sex Education and The X-Files, has made a new investment into women’s football through Crux Football.
Crux Football is a Europe-based multi-club ownership group focused entirely on women’s football, operating in a similar space to Mercury 13 and Michele Kang’s growing portfolio of clubs.
The organisation currently owns French club Montpellier and holds a stake in Swedish side FC Rosengard, two clubs with strong domestic records in their respective leagues.
Crux Football was founded by Bex Smith and features a high-profile roster of figures from sport, media, and business among its leadership and investor base.
The group includes former Brentford head of recruitment Ted Knutson, former US international Julie Foudy, former Netflix figure Cindy Holland, and ex-Visa marketing executive Adrian Farina.
Former Scotland international Jen Beattie is also involved with the organisation, adding further credibility from within the women’s game itself.
Anderson’s stake in Crux Football joins soft drink brand G Spot within her existing investment portfolio, marking a notable expansion into professional sport.
Crux Football welcomed the investment publicly, saying: “Today is a significant milestone for Crux Football as we welcome the incredible Gillian Anderson as one of our investors.”
The organisation added: “In every conversation, Gillian shared a deep commitment to amplifying the voices of women and girls and a strong belief in the power of storytelling to change perceptions.”
The statement continued: “We’re incredibly proud to welcome her to the Crux family and excited about the impact we’ll create together for our players, clubs, fans, and the future of women’s football.”
Former US players Abby Wambach, Ali Krieger, and Leslie Osborne, as well as US basketball player Sue Bird, are also among the Crux Football investor community.
The investment arrives amid surging interest in women’s football, with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian purchasing a 10 per cent stake in Women’s Super League side Chelsea for £20m in 2025, valuing the club at £200m.
Ohanian has since stated his belief that Chelsea could become the world’s first $1bn women’s football club, underlining the scale of ambition now entering the sector.
Montpellier, one of Crux’s owned clubs, have won the French domestic league twice, in 2004 and 2005, and have claimed three Coupe de France titles, the last in 2009.
FC Rosengard bring an even more decorated record, having won the Swedish Damallsvenskan 14 times, including in 2021, 2022, and 2024, along with five domestic cup victories.
