John Size Lines Up Nine Runners As He Bids To Close Gap On Hong Kong Title Leaders

13-time champion trainer John Size could be the man to follow as Sha Tin hosts an 11-race programme, including two Group Three contests, on Sunday.

Size currently sits 10 winners behind leading duo Caspar Fownes and Danny Shum in the trainers’ title race, having seemingly slipped off the pace in recent weeks.

The master trainer has consistently downplayed his prospects of claiming another championship, but 13 race-meetings remain in the season, leaving plenty of time for a resurgence.

With strong firepower across his stable, trebles or better remain well within reach before the campaign draws to a close.

Size sends out nine runners at Sha Tin this weekend, headlined by the hugely exciting prospect Sky Jewellery in the Group Three Lion Rock Trophy Handicap over a mile at 9.05am.

The four-year-old suffered a serious health issue before the end of last year and required all of Size’s expertise and careful handling to return to peak condition.

Two wins since his comeback, including the Class Two Members Cup Handicap over the course and distance earlier this month, suggest he is back firing on all cylinders.

From his present mark in the handicap, Sky Jewellery should prove difficult to beat and represents a serious chance for Size to add to his tally.

Before that race, the stable are expected to get on the scoresheet with Red Maestro, a talented former Irish import who contests the seven-furlong Hakka Cup Handicap at 8.05am.

Size has always had a great deal of time for this son of Ten Sovereigns, going as far as sending him for seven trials before his debut in March.

Red Maestro reappeared earlier this month, producing an eye-catching performance when chasing home Baby Sakura over the course and distance in what appeared a highly encouraging return.

That run should have him cherry-ripe to reward his trainer’s patience and make his mark at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Stable companion Crossborderpegasus completes Size’s notable trio, set to defy top-weight in the six-furlong Hong Kong Ka Ying General Chamber of Commerce Cup Handicap at 11.20am.

The Australian import has won three times across his eight-race career, though his quirky habits during races have frustrated bettors on numerous occasions.

He has looked better behaved in recent outings, and performances against progressive recent winner My Mars suggest Crossborderpegasus has plenty in hand over his rivals heading into Sunday’s contest.
