Hong Kong racing moves to a rare Saturday fixture at Sha Tin this weekend, with an 11-race card that includes action on the all-weather surface.
Rain is once again threatening to disrupt proceedings, with heavy showers and thunderstorms forecast across the city likely to leave ground conditions yielding or soft.
That prospect will delight trainer John Size, who saddles course and distance specialist Stellar Express in the day’s feature, the five-furlong Pearce Memorial Challenge Cup Handicap at 12.35pm.
The son of Zoustar boasts a remarkable record over the straight five furlongs, with five wins and five places from 15 starts, including Group Three glory in the Bauhinia Sprint Trophy back in January.
Size has long maintained that cut in the ground is a bonus for his quick-away galloper, and the horse arrives only a few pounds higher in the weights than he was for his last victory in February.
The trainer has had this contest circled for some time, and all signs point to Stellar Express arriving at the track in prime condition and ready to deliver.
Dangers are plentiful, with Bottomuptogether, Colourful King, and Invincible Sage among those seeking to deny him, while Magic Control is reportedly in peak condition according to track work judges.
Later on the card, Brett Crawford’s Mr Incredible is set to attract plenty of attention from bettors and pundits alike in the six-furlong Shek Sheung River Handicap at 1.40pm.
The son of Toronado made a stunning impression when running away from his rivals over the track and trip in April, and with a favourable draw in gate two, he is expected to go off at odds-on.
He does step up in class against some fast and experienced sprinters, however, and the handicapper has moved quickly to address his victory by handing him a hefty 11-pound penalty.
That opens the door to another John Size runner, Lifeline Express, who carries strong claims for an overdue victory at potentially attractive odds in the same contest.
The Australian import excels on soft ground, returns to his last winning mark in the ratings, and his body weight is near identical to when he last tasted success.
With an inside draw in gate three also working in his favour, Lifeline Express looks the value play of the afternoon for each-way punters willing to take on the favourite.
