Pentagon Drops Christian Denomination Labels After Mike Lee Outcry Over Mormon Exclusion

Senator Mike Lee of Utah broke ranks with the Trump administration after discovering the Pentagon had excluded his faith from its official list of recognised religions.

The Defense Department, under Secretary Pete Hegseth, dramatically reduced its list of officially recognised faith traditions from 211 down to just 31.

Hegseth had previously complained that the Pentagon’s recognition of so many faith traditions was “impractical,” prompting the sweeping consolidation of the list.

The revised list included 21 denominations labelled as Christian, but The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was not among them.

Lee, ordinarily a staunch conservative aligned closely with the Trump administration, described the exclusion of his church as “repugnant” and demanded an immediate correction.

On June 7, Lee posted: “As of two days ago, the Pentagon recognizes every Christian faith in America as Christian Except one That’s not okay, and it needs to change—now.”

The senator’s outburst was notable given his consistent silence on other controversial Pentagon decisions under the same administration he has long supported.

When Hegseth and his team took steps to discriminate against transgender service members, Lee did not speak out publicly against the policy.

When Hegseth intervened in promotion lists to disproportionately target women and minority officers, Lee again remained silent on the matter.

Critics were quick to point out the selective nature of Lee’s objections, noting his protest arrived only once his own community faced the consequences of broader discriminatory policies.

One observer noted: “No one gets to criticize any aspect of the administration without MAGA immediately turning on you, no matter how slavish you’ve been toward Trump in the past.”

Following a weekend of uproar led largely by Lee, the Defense Department reversed course and walked back its categorisation entirely.

On June 8, the Pentagon published a new list of Religious Affiliation Codes that no longer designates certain religions specifically as Christian.

The episode highlighted how quickly administration allies can find themselves on the wrong side of policies they had previously done little to scrutinise or challenge.
