In twenty years of motoring journalism, being invited to drive a Rolls-Royce on a racetrack is, apparently, a once-in-a-career opportunity not to be refused.
The historic Goodwood Motor Circuit, situated close to the Rolls-Royce factory in West Sussex, provided the dramatic setting for the Spectre Series II’s most unusual test.
The prospect of hustling a 2.9-tonne luxury coupe around one of Britain’s fastest and least forgiving circuits is every bit as daunting as it sounds.
Rolls-Royce’s first electric vehicle has been generally well received since launch, and the Spectre is now the marque’s best-selling car in Europe, outselling even the Cullinan SUV on the continent.
CEO Chris Brownridge has noted that “a Rolls-Royce is perfectly suited to electrification,” and the Spectre’s combination of effortless refinement and aristocratic presence helps explain why buyers agree.
Changes for the Series II update are deliberately modest, with new 23-inch forged wheels being the only visible difference from the outside.
Beneath the bodywork, a larger 112.4kWh battery extends the official range from 329 miles to 390 miles, while a peak charging speed of 195kW reduces a 10-to-80 percent charge to just 28 minutes.
Power rises from 584hp to 600hp, with torque climbing to a substantial 749lb ft, and the Black Badge Infinity mode pushes those figures to 680hp and 811lb ft, making it the most powerful production Rolls-Royce ever built.
Inside, the Spectre favours plush, tactile materials and bespoke detailing over wall-to-wall screens, with new options including a bamboo-based fabric called Duality Twill that requires 2.6 million stitches and ten miles of thread to complete a full interior.
A new Brindled Walnut veneer, made using eucalyptus fibres left over from paper production, adds another layer of sustainable craftsmanship to the already extensive personalisation options available.
The track test itself was not purely a publicity exercise, as these Series II cars were near-production prototypes not yet registered for road use, making Goodwood the only legal place to drive them.
At low speeds the anti-roll bars automatically disconnect to soften the ride, but above 10mph they tighten up considerably, giving the supersized coupe surprising composure through a slalom course on the pit straight.
Rear-wheel steering helps tuck the Spectre into tight corners and tightens its turning circle during low-speed manoeuvring, making it feel far more agile than its considerable dimensions and weight would suggest.
At circuit speeds, the Spectre makes progress with an almost eerie sense of calm, with its 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds arriving without any of the uncouth surge associated with lesser electric vehicles.
The car’s braking ability was equally composed, with an emergency stop from 60mph covering just 15 metres, roughly three car-lengths, with no vibration through the pedal and no deviation in the steering.
Switching to the Black Badge variant for unrestricted hot laps revealed a more urgent character, with launch control cutting the 0-62mph time to 4.3 seconds and delivering strong mid-range performance throughout every corner of the circuit.
A long-term development prototype, described internally as the “mileage car,” had accumulated 74,000 miles since 2024, yet its battery health display still showed 98 percent and the cabin felt entirely factory-fresh.
That endurance vehicle would cost £333,185 to replicate from new, which looks relatively measured against the circa £450,000 price tag attached to the Ferrari Luce.
The Spectre Series II will never be a track-day weapon of choice, but it proved conclusively that one of the world’s heaviest luxury cars can hold its composure at speed without ever breaking a sweat.
