Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is intensifying pressure on Todd Blanche over the unexplained prison transfer of convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell.
Whitehouse, the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Courts Subcommittee, sent a letter this week to both Blanche and Bureau of Prisons Director William Marshall demanding answers.
The letter concerns Maxwell’s transfer from FCI Tallahassee to a minimum-security prison camp in Texas, a move that has drawn sustained scrutiny from the senator.
Maxwell, who was convicted as Jeffrey Epstein’s closest associate, was transferred under circumstances Whitehouse has repeatedly described as irregular and unexplained.
This latest letter is part of a series Whitehouse began sending more than ten months ago, none of which have received a response from the Trump Department of Justice.
The timeline has drawn particular attention, as Blanche personally flew to prison to interview Maxwell while serving as Deputy Attorney General, an unusual step for the DOJ’s second-highest official.
Whitehouse wrote in his new letter that “Ms. Maxwell’s abrupt transfer has the appearance of a political favor orchestrated by Acting Attorney General Blanche.”
The Bureau of Prisons pushed back last week, posting on X that Maxwell’s transfers “were made independently by BOP” based on “established criteria” and that “no preference, special treatment, or political influence played any role.”
Whitehouse responded sharply, arguing that if those claims are accurate, the BOP should face no obstacle in releasing records he first requested over ten months ago.
The senator also flagged a recently published change to Bureau of Prisons policy, specifically Change Notice 3 to Program Statement 5100.08, which appeared last month and attracted little public attention.
That policy change purports to grant the Attorney General new personal authority to designate or redesignate where any federal prisoner is housed, a significant expansion of executive power.
The timing of that policy shift, coming amid ongoing questions about Maxwell’s transfer, is among the specific matters Whitehouse has said he wants explained.
Whitehouse has set a deadline of 10 July 2026 for all relevant documents and communications to be handed over to his office.
With Blanche’s confirmation hearing now approaching, the unanswered letters and outstanding document requests are likely to become central points of questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
