Smokeball, the law practice management software company, has unveiled a sweeping new global brand identity built around the concept of “powering people-law.”
The rebrand is not a reinvention but a deliberate doubling down on the solo, small and mid-sized law firms that form the backbone of Smokeball’s existing customer base.
The company’s new positioning carries the tagline “Less admin. More time for the people who need you most,” placing human need at the centre of its market message.
Smokeball’s chief operating officer and cofounder Jane Oxley confirmed that not one of the firm’s current customers has more than 100 total staff members.
Those customers practice across areas including family law, personal injury, real estate, criminal defense, employment and business law, serving ordinary individuals rather than large corporations.
“We talk a lot about community at Smokeball, and it’s something we feel really strongly about,” Oxley said. “They’re out there helping the communities all day, every day, and doing that stuff that glues us all together.”
The branding grew out of conversations with at least 50 Smokeball customers across the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, focusing on why those lawyers do what they do rather than on software.
From that process, the company developed a new vision statement, “We connect lawyers to pride in their profession,” and a new mission statement, “We enable productivity that lightens the burden of administration.”
The most visible change is the replacement of Smokeball’s long-standing orb logo with a flag, which the company describes as “a universal symbol of advocacy.”
Oxley confirmed the flag was designed to represent flying the flag of people-law, with a straighter edge nodding to the equality symbol and a rippled form conveying motion.
“It is exactly that — flying the flag of people-law,” Oxley said. “Our clients are beautiful advocates for their clients, and we want to be the best advocate for our clients.”
The company’s signature orange colour scheme has been retained but refreshed, with the new shade given its own name: Power Orange.
Oxley described this initiative as a brand refresh rather than a full rebranding, and said it also serves to give lawyers recognition for work that frequently goes unacknowledged by the public.
“They know they do important work,” Oxley said. “No one ever thanks them for it. People complain to them a lot. It’s pretty thankless work a lot of the time.”
Smokeball cofounder and CEO Hunter Steele said the company’s growth into a global business made the refresh necessary. “As we’ve grown into a global business, we realized our brand had not kept up with the value we provide.”
“This isn’t a reinvention of Smokeball, it’s who we’ve always been,” Steele added. “Law has always been, and will always be, a people business. Our role is to power the lawyers behind that work, giving them more time to focus on the people who need them most.”
Oxley noted the company has been growing faster than ever, gaining market share in the US and Australia while building its presence in the UK.
She added that Smokeball’s image had fallen behind its technology, which has changed substantially in recent years, driven in large part by artificial intelligence.
“We were at that point where we felt like we didn’t have a unique place in market, and we needed to really do better,” Oxley said.
The new brand campaign captures its mission with characteristic directness in one line: “Because you didn’t go to law school for admin.”
