Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has suggested that Xabi Alonso could be a potential candidate for the Spurs’ managerial role.
Sherwood made this statement on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, speculating that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy might consider the ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder for the position.
Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports that Tottenham is seriously considering hiring Alonso as their new manager.
Interestingly, Alonso has also been linked with a return to Liverpool as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp.
In January 2023, Goal reported that Liverpool was monitoring Alonso’s progress as a manager. While Klopp continues to have success at Anfield, it is understood that he will not remain at the club indefinitely. As a result, Liverpool is reportedly considering Alonso as a long-term option.
Sherwood commented on the possibility of Alonso managing Tottenham, saying, “Yeah, I could imagine that. Anyone who is in vogue gets the chance to manage Tottenham.”
Despite the speculation, it is our opinion that Tottenham Hotspur should not appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager in the summer of 2023.
While Alonso has been performing well at Bayer Leverkusen, his tenure has only lasted a few months. Furthermore, at 41 years old, he may lack the experience necessary to make an immediate impact.
For Tottenham to progress both as a club and on the pitch, they should look for a more experienced manager capable of making an immediate impact on the team.
