Thomas Cashman made headlines in Liverpool and the broader United Kingdom in 2022.
In August 2022, Liverpool was shaken by a tragic event that highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence on communities. Nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel was fatally shot in her home in Dovecot, Liverpool, during a botched gangland hit. The intended target was Joseph Nee, a convicted burglar and drug dealer, but Olivia was the one who lost her life, a casualty of a violent underworld feud.
The Incident
On the evening of August 22, 2022, Olivia’s mother, Cheryl Korbel, heard a disturbance outside their home and opened the front door to investigate. At that moment, Joseph Nee, fleeing from Thomas Cashman, attempted to force his way into the house. Cashman, wearing a balaclava and black jacket, approached and fired multiple shots. One bullet passed through Cheryl’s hand and struck Olivia in the chest, fatally wounding her. She was pronounced dead shortly after at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
The Perpetrator: Thomas Cashman
Thomas Cashman, a 34-year-old from West Derby, Liverpool, was identified as the gunman responsible for Olivia’s death. Prior to the incident, Cashman had a history of involvement in drug dealing, reportedly earning between £3,000 and £5,000 a week from selling large quantities of cannabis. He had 18 previous convictions for 33 offences.
Following the shooting, Cashman was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent, and possession of firearms. The investigation revealed that Cashman had been pursuing Joseph Nee, a member of a well-established organised crime group, during the attack. Nee had a history of criminal activity, including drug dealing and burglary.
The Trial and Sentencing
In March 2023, Cashman’s trial commenced at Manchester Crown Court. The prosecution presented evidence, including CCTV footage, that showed Cashman firing shots at Nee and the subsequent tragic events leading to Olivia’s death. On March 30, 2023, Cashman was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent, and two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
On April 3, 2023, Cashman was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 42 years before being considered for parole. He was also sentenced to 10 years for wounding Olivia’s mother and two 18-year sentences for possession of firearms, all to run concurrently. Cashman was not present in court to hear his sentence.
The Aftermath in Liverpool
The murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel sent shockwaves through Liverpool and the wider community. Her death highlighted the dangers posed by gang-related violence and the far-reaching consequences it can have on innocent lives. The case prompted calls for increased efforts to combat organised crime and protect communities from such tragedies.
In the wake of the incident, Olivia’s family, particularly her mother Cheryl, expressed their grief and the profound impact of their loss. Cheryl described Olivia as her “beautiful baby girl” and spoke of the unbearable silence left in their home. The community rallied around the family, offering support and solidarity during their time of mourning.
The case also brought attention to the issue of gang violence in Liverpool. Organised crime groups, such as the Huyton Firm, have had a significant presence in the city, engaging in activities like drug trafficking and violent crime. The murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel underscored the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of gang violence and protect vulnerable individuals from its effects.
Looking Forward
The tragic death of Olivia Pratt-Korbel serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of gang violence. While justice has been served with the conviction and sentencing of Thomas Cashman, the broader issue of organised crime remains a challenge for Liverpool and other communities affected by similar violence. Efforts to dismantle criminal networks, support at-risk individuals, and foster community resilience are essential steps toward preventing such tragedies in the future.
As Liverpool continues to heal from this devastating event, the memory of Olivia Pratt-Korbel lives on, inspiring renewed commitment to creating safer communities for all.
