Britain’s engineering sector continues to grapple with a persistent and worsening skills shortage, with technical education reform seen as central to finding a lasting solution.
The latest projections indicate that 240,000 new engineers and technicians are needed every year just to fill existing roles across the UK economy.
Only 17 per cent of UK engineers are women, compared to 56 per cent in other occupations, representing a stark and long-standing imbalance in the profession.
Only 15 per cent of engineers come from ethnic minority backgrounds, compared to 18 per cent in other occupations, further underlining the diversity gap within the sector.
Dame Tamara Finkelstein DCB, chief executive of the Royal Academy of Engineering, argues that stronger technical education pathways are essential to plugging this skills gap nationally and regionally.
Despite the scale of demand, only 45,000 apprenticeships are taken up annually in engineering and manufacturing, a figure that falls well short of what the sector requires.
The UK’s approach to technical education has historically been inconsistent, swinging in and out of favour over the last century, with curriculum reforms often producing unintended consequences for engineering talent.
The number of pupils studying GCSE and A-level Design and Technology has been in steep decline since 2004, when its status as a compulsory subject at key stage 4 was removed.
Many schools subsequently reduced or removed the laboratories, workshops, and equipment needed to deliver practical subjects, creating further barriers to developing future engineering talent.
The introduction of T-levels in the late 2010s provided technical qualifications equivalent to three A-levels, while the Labour government has more recently proposed V-levels to offer broader qualifications equivalent to one A-level.
Finkelstein notes that “both have value but the degree of change makes it difficult for the education system to commit and build a strong and sustainable approach.”
A survey conducted by the Academy found that some 30 per cent of economically inactive 16 to 24-year-olds cited lacking the right qualifications, education, or work experience as one of their three biggest barriers to employment.
Simplifying the complex landscape of vocational education and training pathways is described as an essential step towards improving access for students from all backgrounds.
Supporting teachers is identified as imperative, with the Academy working alongside schools and colleges to help educators deliver engineering-based activities and discuss career pathways with students.
The government is being urged to help businesses of all sizes overcome the bureaucratic and financial hurdles involved in offering student placements, given that work experience is vital to vocational education success.
Finkelstein welcomed the government’s stated commitment to technical education but stressed that announcements must be “followed by action to equip young people with the skills they need for the future, whether they follow a vocational or academic path.”
